Laureates Honored at Nobel Monument Ceremony

The names of the 2007 American Nobel Laureates were unveiled at a ceremony by the Nobel Monument in Theodore Roosevelt Park at The American Museum of Natural History in New York City on June 3, 2008.

The ceremony celebrated the addition onto the Monument of the names of the American Nobel Laureates of 2007 – Mario R. Capecchi (Medicine); Oliver Smithies (Medicine); Al Gore (Peace); Leonid Hurwics (Economics); Eric S. Maskin (Economics); and Roger B. Myerson (Economics).

The program included remarks by Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Ambassador Ulf Hjertonsson, Consul General of Sweden in New York and Dr. Roger B. Myerson, 2007 Nobel Laureate in Economics. After a musical performance by the choral ensemble Sound of Sweden, the monument was unveiled.

After the ceremony, the Consulate General of Sweden hosted a buffet luncheon inside the American Museum of Natural History. The luncheon featured remarks by Dr. Oliver Smithies, 2007 Nobel Laureate in Medicine, who was introduced by Mingzhu Li, winner of the 2007 The Laureates of Tomorrow – Nobel Essay Contest in the Physics category.
